'Nigerian Criminal Networks'

In the last couple of years the media has been covering many activities of Nigerian criminal networks in the Netherlands. Several Nigerian criminal networks have been involved in criminal activities in the Netherlands, which vary from cocaine trade to credit card/ internet fraud. Yet, there has not been much academic attention on the modus operandi of these networks. Internationally, several multilateral organizations, like the UNODC and the UNICRI, are involved in large scale investigations on the type and size of Nigerian criminal networks and the transnational connections of these networks.

In the morning session the Nigerian situation will be discussed. We will take a look at local perceptions of individuals on certain criminal activities, like ‘419’ fraud and corrupt practices. Also, the approach of law enforcement agencies within Nigeria will be discussed, like the work of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission .
In the afternoonsession the central theme will be the current situation in the Netherlands: What is the type of criminal activities that Nigerian criminal networks are involved in the Netherlands and what are the greatest difficulties in the control and persecution by Dutch law enforcement agencies?
